Switzerland’s ETH Zurich ranks fourth in the European top 10 list and 11th in the global ranking. The institute, whose focus is science, technology and mathematics, has produced more than 20 Nobel Prize winners, including Albert Einstein. Two universities from Germany complete the European top ten – the Technical University of Munich and the “Ludwig” University of Munich (LMU).

What are the best universities in the world?

European universities account for over 40% of Times Higher Education’s list of the best universities in the world. Including 1,799 higher education institutions from 104 countries and regions, the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of the world’s best universities is the largest and most diverse. The ranking is based on 13 indicators that measure the performance of each institution in four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international perspective.

Top 10 best universities in the world

The US has 34 universities in this year’s ranking of the top 100, down six from five years ago. The University of Minnesota dropped out of the top 100; of Maryland, “College Park”; Michigan State University; The Ohio State University and Dartmouth College.

At the same time, in 2023, 36 of the world’s top 100 universities are in Europe. However, this is not the best performance of the Old Continent in the ranking – in 2016 there were 42 European universities in the top hundred.

Sixteen of the remaining 30 universities in the top 100 are in Asia, with 2023 seeing China increase its performance and now have seven universities, up from six a year earlier and just three five years ago.

The e-European universities

Over 600 of the THE 1799 universities are in Europe. The University of Oxford in Great Britain leads the global world ranking and, accordingly, takes first place among European higher education institutions. A further 102 UK universities feature in the overall ranking. Spain and Italy are also well represented with 55 institutions each. After Brexit, the two countries, as well as the Scandinavian countries, which offer the most affordable education, are increasingly attracting the interest of Bulgarian youth.

In the THE ranking, the Scandinavian countries also have an enviable presence – Sweden and Finland are present in the ranking with 13 and 10 universities respectively, and Denmark with seven, led by the University of Copenhagen. Out of 52 higher education institutions in Bulgaria, only two fall into the world ranking – Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and Technical University in Sofia.
